Audience:
Classic FM is a much more music driven programme than Chris Moyles' drive time chat show. This show involves considerably less dialogue than Radio 1. Having listened to the show for 10 minutes, the first section of dialogue shows itself, lasting approximately 30 seconds Margherita Taylor states facts about the last song and introduces the next.
The only feature of this show being classical music, the Demographic and psychodemographics of the audience are very specific: Listeners of Classical Music. While the show is funded by adverts they are far between, while this is partly due to the length of each piece, it does reduce the annoyance to the viewer.
In all the focus on music makes this type of radio particularly easy to listen to in the background, perhaps whilst cooking, working or cleaning, as it requires little to no attention to understand. This type of Music is also likely to be popular among an older audience.
On their website Classic FM confirms their core audience is 35+ upmarket ABC1 listeners.
Voice:
The voice Margherita uses has a particularly low pitched tone, giving her voice a great deal of comfort. The pitch is not mono tonal so as to bore but does avoid particularly low or high notes, this further comforts and relaxes the listener. Compare to Chris Moyles this type of voice is in all much more relaxing and, while Chris' voice suites the music he plays, so does Margherita's suit the classical music she plays.
The projection is closer than Chris Moyles which in someways makes it more intimate, however the facts she states and the way she says them helps convert this intimacy to a kind of authority that does not com across at all patronising.
Her pace is slower than Chris' team's, this makes her much more efficient and succinct in portraying information, which suits the smalls slots in which she speaks perfectly as she must give a certain amount of information effectively within a small space of time. She avoids the fine line between speak so slow as to patronise and speaking slow enough to comfort and give information easily.
Mode of Address:
Conversely to Radio 1's Chris Moyles show Classic FM is both much more formal and much more direct. Being a lone presenter Margherita must speak directly to the audience as she tells them the information she has to share as apposed to revealing it through indirect chat with co-presenters. Her formal language and tone help relate with an audience who may see them selfs as more refined and may relate better to a formal with enunciated dialect.
Institutional Context:
Classic FM is broadcast on: FM radio, DAB radio, Sky television, virgin television and the internet. This makes the show a world wide broadcaster. While this may control a vast amount of The Chris Moyles' show's content, as Classic FMs main content it a certain genre of Music there is little to change and adapt to widen their target audience.
Audience Interaction:
Classic FM is, like Radio 1, a cross media platform. It has a well laid out website offering on demand listening, live listening, news, shop etc. It also publishes: a Magazine, Events and Concerts, Books and CDs as well as TV content.
The Show, due to its simple nature, has less need for interaction with its audience. However there are a number of contact methods on the website where people can contact the show for any reason they may have.
