Using Free Information from RAJAR ( I have gathered this.
Radio 1 reaches 11,647,000 people
23% Reach
With an average of 8.2 hours per listener
These Results were for period ending September 2010, all individuals were 15+.
These Incredible figures demonstrate the huge scale international radio works on.
Again from early conclusions based on the newest questionnaires we are most likely to be a smaller local radio station more like 'Touch FM'.
I will now look further into 'Touch FM'
RAJAR does not feature information on 'Touch FM'
Here are the results from Touchradio Coventry, while this is not the same, it is more comparable to our radio show than BBC Radio 1.
Reach - 27,000 people
9% Reach
on average 4.5 hours per listener
These figures are more achievable, yet this radio station is broadcast in many ways including FM radio (a resource we don't posses).
I will now look at some of the information from a show that is of a much similar scale and only broadcasts over the internet.
'Live 365' is a radio station that only streams over the internet.

Here is some of the information available on the advertisers page:
Internet Radio is growing rapidly, and is already a significant part of many companies' marketing campaigns. A recent Arbitron report noted:
- Over 50% of Internet users consume streaming media
- Streaming media attracts a highly compelling advertising target
- 56% of audio streamers rate Internet audio as being "new and fresh"
Our Audience
Internet Radio naturally targets a favorable demographic:- Affluent professionals in their 20's and 30's
- Tech-savvy, highly educated
- Large disposable income, comfortable spending online
Live365 has a very dedicated and loyal audience:
- Each listener launches an average of 25 streams per month
- Approximately 9 hours of listening per user per month (this average includes those who only tune in once and surf away)
- Loyalty and frequency of use give you the opportunity to make a significant and lasting impression on listeners
The perfect channel to reach the at-work audience:
- Live365 listenership is at its highest during work hours, when terrestrial radio listening is reduced
- Professionals listen to Live365 while working in their office or cubicle
- Live365 is complimentary to terrestrial radio campaigns - hit your audience at drive times AND in between, when they're in their offices
Live365's audience stats:
- 2 million unique visitors each month
- Over a million registered users
- 73% between 25 and 54
- 58% earn more than $50,000 per year
A highly desirable audience, a huge market share, and a highly targeted delivery platform, Live365 offers advantages over terrestrial radio and other Internet broadcasters.
This information is very interesting, it also gives me ideas as to how to explain our audience if we are to publish an audience profile for advertisers.
Live365's audience is however very different from ours, being much older, wealthier and more educated.
This information is useful on some levels but the most useful information will be back on Chris Moyles website. His audience profile is similar to ours, but unfortunately because its the BBC they have no need to publish and official audience profile.
We will however use Radio 1 to gather ideas and help with our style, we may also use it when deciding on our playlist.
RAJAR - Internet Radio
I've found some interesting figures provided by RAJAR talking about the use of internet as an audio platform.
http://www.rajar.co.uk/docs/news/2008_01_rajar_podcasting_listening.pdf
The chart on the first page of the link (provided by RAJAR), visually demonstrates how weekly listening figures of internet streaming have increased of the last 6 quarters.
After explaining that this research is only 'a toe in the water' the report goes on to summarise: "Almost 12 million people have claimed to listen to radio via the Internet, including 9.1 million listening live and 7.6 million who have used Listen Again services. In addition, 4.3 million have downloaded a Podcast."
They also tell us that in any given week 8.1 million people listen to Radio via the internet either live or through an on-demand service.
The average user listens to 1.88 programmes each week. 13% of On-demand users say they now listen to Live Radio more, while 8% say they actually listen to less.
Table 1 in the report gives a detailed report as to how often people listen to internet Radio, saying that 11,936,000 people use internet radio services.
Table 2 explains that 91.5% of people who listen to internet radio listen to it at home. This question is backed up by the figures from a question we asked on our second questionnaire "how do you listen to the internet?". The Results to this question tell us that 83% of people listen to internet on a computer using either live streaming or an on-demand service.
This report gives information on a number of other interesting matters, but they are not as relevant to my point and so I will not publish them.
Conclusion
This information here tells us that the popularity of internet radio is increasing exponentially and thus this is a good time to launch a new station. Internet is also becoming faster and more reliable making the activity of listening to internet radio more enjoyable and more widely available. We now know that we should target an audience at home, as apposed to in the car or walking through town. This means we will potentially leave out features such as traffic reports unless other research tells us otherwise.
